Peter Vidani on the Evolution of the Tumblr Dashboard
Ministry of Design senior minister Peter Vidani lays hands on every aspect of Tumblr’s visual and usage aesthetic. Initially contracted to work on theme creation, he came aboard full-time in 2009 and has steadily advanced his design philosophy of utility and simplicity. One of his primary, perpetual obsessions could be considered the real face of Tumblr: the Dashboard.

Seems like IKEA are really shaking things up this year. In addition to the previously announced TV set, they’re also going to release a digital camera made of cardboard called Knäppa (“Snap”). It’ll hold 40 photographs at a time and plugs directly into your USB port. While it’s not the prettiest camera the world has ever seen, I do love the idea of a screen-less digital camera that brings people back to the wait-and-see days of film.

I’m not usually one to promote apps of any kind but when you have such a pleasant experience with a product or company’s goods, it’s hard not to share.
The long and short of VSCO Cam can be seen in Visual Supply Co’s intro video; I use their Film plugins for Lightroom and Camera Raw and they’re the closest I can get to film with a digital camera. So close in fact, that when viewing a Portra 400 scan next to a digital image of nearly the same scene, the colors and grain are close to identical.
At 99 cents it’s hard to go wrong. It’s no instagram replacement but it blows any other simplified camera app out of the water. Shoot & edit something that looks utterly great in a few taps of the screen.
